Washington, DC — As part of an ongoing effort to pressure Walmart into denouncing Donald Trump’s racist, xenophobic and misogynistic campaign, Making Change at Walmart (MCAW) announced a week of actions calling on Walmart to stop selling Trump products. Starting October 22nd, the week of action will include events in Washington, DC; Anaheim, CA; Minneapolis, MN; Chicago, Ill; Dallas, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Cincinnati, OH; and New York, NY; and will demonstrate how America’s largest employer, Walmart, shares many of the same values as Donald Trump.
Additionally, MCAW sent a letter to Walmart CEO Doug McMillon asking the world’s largest retailer to break its silence on Trump’s hateful rhetoric.
“Walmart refused to denounce Donald Trump in the weeks leading up to the Republican convention, and since then, he’s only gotten worse,” said Jess Levin, communications director at MCAW.
“First there was the inexcusable and vile Access Hollywood tape, and now there is a growing list of women accusing Trump of sexual assault. Walmart cannot stay silent any longer. They need to send a message to their customers and employees that it does not support this candidate, and it does not support his behavior. Walmart should stop selling products that promote Trump online and in stores.”
The letter to McMillon reads:
Dear Mr. McMillon,
In July, we asked you to join major corporations who had taken a public stand against the racist, misogynistic, anti-veteran and Islamophobic statements of Donald Trump by refusing to contribute to the 2016 Republican National Convention. Instead of speaking up, you remained silent, and let your $15,000 earlier donation stand.
Since the Republican National Convention, more corporations, and now even Republican politicians, have spoken out against Mr. Trump as new, appalling and degrading comments and behavior have come to light. The Washington Post reported that Mr. Trump, while filming a segment for Access Hollywood in 2005, bragged that as “a star,” “you can do anything” to women, specifically, “Grab them by the p—y. You can do anything.” Women have started coming forward to say that the Republican candidate groped, kissed or inappropriately touched them without their consent.
Walmart stayed silent after Mr. Trump implied that Mexican immigrants are drug dealers and rapists, after he attacked an American-born federal judge for his Hispanic heritage, after he called for a ban of all Muslim immigrants from the United States, after he insulted veterans and mocked disabled Americans. But after he blatantly promoted and allegedly participated in sexual assault, you cannot stay silent anymore.
Walmart sells hundreds of products that either potentially financially benefit Donald Trump or otherwise promote his candidacy. We are asking for you to immediately remove all of these products from your website and stores, and publicly denounce Mr. Trump. If you do choose to remain silent, we must ask: Are Mr. Trump’s values the same as Walmart’s values?
As America’s largest employer and one of the largest companies in the country, you have a responsibility to speak out against the values Donald Trump stands for. We, along with your customers and employees, are watching and waiting for you to do what is right.
