Six Degrees of the Walmart 1% – Equal pay edition

With the Wimbledon finals coming up this weekend, let’s kick off this week’s installment of the Six Degrees of the Walmart 1% with a tennis star.

She didn’t make it very far this year, but Venus Williams is a five-time champion at the All England Club. And in 2007, Williams’ prize for winning Wimbledon was equal to the male champion’s for the first time in the tournament’s history. In fact, Venus Williams and Billie Jean King are given much of the credit for paving the way to equal prize money for men and women in tennis.

And Billie Jean King is not just a tennis legend; she’s also an acquaintance of Walmart board member Michele Burns. The two serve together on the board of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. We wonder if they’ve ever talked about equal pay
