The Walmart 1 Percent: Refusing to foster LGBT Equality

As we celebrate the LGBT community this month and the ongoing fight for LGBT equality, we’ll be bringing you a series of blog posts that illustrate the ways in which Walmart and the Walton Family have repeatedly proven themselves to be enemies of LGBT-equality. Today’s post will focus on Walmart’s failure to protect the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBT equality, issued their Corporate Equality Index for 2012. While 10 of 20 top Fortune-ranked companies achieved scores of 100, Walmart found itself near the bottom of the list, with just four companies receiving lower scores.

Specifically, the HRC report noted that:

  • Walmart does not offer health, dental or vision benefits to same sex partners
  • Walmart does not offer Transgender-Inclusive Insurance Coverage
  • Walmart does not having company-wide organizational competency programs highlighting sexual orientation and gender identity

Walmart scored in the bottom fifth among retail and consumer products employers participating in HRC’s survey, while fourteen such employers received perfect scores.
